Local News!

        The Senior Games are happening in Rock Hill this week at Boyd Hill Recreation Center. They played disc golf on Tuesday and on Thursday they will have a free public health fair. I think this is great and I had never heard of the Senior Games before, but I love the idea that they can spend time with people their age and enjoy playing games at the same time.

State News!
        Someone from Columbia, S.C., won last week's Powerball jackpot of $400 million and has chosen to be kept anonymous. The ticket was turned in on Monday and it was a very lucky win because it was only the winner's second time ever playing the game. I was very shocked when I first read the news because it's amazing that this person won on their second time playing, when many people go their entire lives playing and never win. Wow! That person is very lucky!

National News!
             The Oracle Team USA won against the Emirates New Zealand and the big win is being referred to as "one of the greatest comebacks in sports history".  The team was very close to having to give up America's Cup but at the end, when no one thought possible, they pulled through and won. I was surprised when I read this because it's kind of like they had a miracle win, but that's awesome. It was also good to read some national news that were happy news for once.

International News!
        A man in Beijing was sentenced to death for killing a baby in an argument over a parking space. He was mad because the mother was blocking the car's path with the pushchair, so he hit the mother and then grabbed the 2 year old and hurled the baby out of her pram. The little girl was in a hospital for 50 hours due to brain damage caused from being dashed to the pavement and then died. The court gave him a death sentence for this crime. I was so shocked after reading about it, that is a terrible thing that he would do that to a little baby just because of a parking space. This is crazy and things like this shouldn't happen.

Compare/Contrast:
        The news were all different and focused on different topics. The local and national news were most alike because they were about sports. The first three stories were happy and positive stories but the last one was a tragic one. I noticed that local news were happy for the most part but as I moved up to international news, I found it harder to find good news. All the news stories were alike because they were about things that people find interesting and want to read more about. They were different too, because the audience for each story changes as it goes from local, community based, to international, world wide based.

Guided By My Ethics...

       Ethics are defined as the moral principles that govern a person's behavior. I have a personal code of ethics by which I am guided by in my life. One of them is honesty, it is so important to me to try to live by this ethic because I was raised with it and I consider it the right thing to do. Also, because I think that telling the truth is much easier than lying and not telling the truth can hurt people and cause them to never be able to trust you. Another is be respectful, which falls along with the "do to others as you would have them do to you" rule. This is a big one because being respectful means treating others as I wish to be treated because I can't expect people to be respectful or treat me a certain way, if I am not the same with them. Being kind is also one of my ethics because being nice and kind to someone can sometimes affect his or her life in such a great way. Integrity is also very important to me because I was raised in a family with strong morals and we believe in having a strong character. All of my ethics play such a great role in my every day life because I try to live by them 100 percent of the time, they influence every decision I make.

The Tragedy of 9/11

   On September 11, 2001, I was only three years old and I lived in my country of origin Colombia, South America. I don't remember anything at all from that day but I have heard many things about it. I know that it was a terrorist attack in which two air planes were highjacked and crashed into the twin  towers which collapsed and killed thousands of people. People have told me that it was a terrible experience because it created chaos with people rushing every where trying to aid those who were hurt. Also, I have heard of stories from people who worked in the towers but for some reason didn't go that day and thanks to that they survived the tragedy. I know it was something that greatly impacted the nation and is still remembered in order to honor those who sacrificed their lives rescuing others and to those who died from the collapsed towers.

   One thing in the video of 9/11 that impacted me was that the there was a third building that collapsed. The world trade seven burned for 7 hours and then finally collapsed but thanks to an unknown order, the building had been evacuated hours before. The video showed all the information which I know from that day; the paramedics and firefighters rushing to the scene and confusion that was brought by the event. Many weren't sure if their loved ones had survived and people rushed to volunteer and help along with many others . There wasn't anything different to that which I have heard except that I didn't know that a third building had collapsed. This video made me feel sad for those who died and for those who lost their loved ones. It's really a tragedy that someone could purposely cause the death of so many people.

Other Blogs

   I found the 10,000 Words blog of 3 Rules for Getting To Sources On Social Media to be very interesting. It offered three rules on the best way to reach out to a source on social media and get them to respond. A positive thing about this blog was that the rules were numbered, easy to follow and straight to the point. A negative thing was that it didn't give extra information on the rules or anything related to them. I think this blog cannot be considered journalism because it wasn't about news, it was only the author's advice/tips. The blogger should be considered a journalist because even though it was advice, I could tell he or she was experienced and knew about interviewing people in journalism.

   The second blog I looked at was the Global Voices blog of Tokyo to Host 2020 Olympics. This was about the news that Tokyo was chosen by the International Olympic Committee to be the host of the 2020 Olympics. A good thing I noticed was that this blog included a link to a picture related to the topic. Also, the title catches the reader's attention because many people are interested in the olympics. A negative thing about it was how short it is and how little information it gave. The reader clicks on it expecting to find more detail but all they find is one sentence that gives about as much information as the title. I don't think this can be considered journalism because of the lack of information. I am sure this blogger is not a journalist because the blog was very poorly done and it didn't in any way reflect the writings of a true journalist.

Barbie Obsession

A 33 year old man, Jian Yang, has a Barbie collection of over 6,000 dolls.
He started his collection at the age of 13, when he bought his first Barbie. He says he has spent about $392,000 in dolls over the past twenty years and plans to buy many more to expand his collection.
